Turn your oven to 450°F and grease a 9x9 glass or ceramic pan with cooking spray.

In a big pan, cook up the breakfast sausage over medium-high heat for about 8–10 minutes until no pink is left. Lay it on paper towels to drain.

In a bowl, combine flour, sugar, and baking powder. Add buttermilk a bit at a time, stirring until you get a sticky dough. Toss in the cooked sausage and shredded cheese, stirring lightly.

Pour that melted butter into your dish. Scoop out the dough and spread it out evenly in the pan. Cut it into 9 squares with a knife.

Pop the dish in the oven on the center rack. Bake for 25–30 minutes, spinning it once midway. Cover with foil if the top’s browning too fast. It’s done when a toothpick slides out of the center cleanly.
