Southern Candied Yams (Print Version)

# Ingredients:

→ Main Ingredients

01 - A pinch of salt
02 - 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
03 - 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
04 - 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
05 - 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
06 - 1/2 cup sugar (white)
07 - 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
08 - 3 pounds peeled sweet potatoes

# Instructions:

01 - Set your oven temperature to 350°F and let it heat up.
02 - Cut sweet potatoes into slices and toss them in a big pot with enough water to cover. Boil them for around 5 minutes. The edges should soften, but the centers should stay firm. Drain the water and put them back in the pot.
03 - Melt butter in a pan with both sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and salt. Stir over medium heat until the sugar has dissolved, which takes about 5 minutes.
04 - Drizzle the sugary mix over the sweet potatoes and carefully coat them. Move everything into a baking dish and bake for 10 minutes. Stir the potatoes in the syrup, then pop them back in the oven for another 15 to 20 minutes until they're fully soft, and the syrup thickens.
05 - Wait 5 minutes for everything to settle before digging in.

# Notes:

01 - This warm and cozy side works for any big family meal—Thanksgiving, Christmas, or just a weeknight treat. The sweet potatoes soak up a buttery, sugary glaze with cinnamon and nutmeg until they’re soft and sticky.
02 - Try topping it with marshmallows and toasting them for extra sweetness, or sprinkle on some crunchy pecans (either plain or candied).
03 - Leftover portions stay tasty for up to 3 days if you keep them chilled in a sealed container.
